Why Angels Among Us Exists

Born from experience. Built for every family.

Angels Among Us was not born in a boardroom. It was born somewhere much more ordinary — in the daily reality of raising a child with a disability in a rural community, where finding the right therapy meant clearing your schedule for the day, where a specialist appointment could require crossing state lines, and where something as simple as inclusive recreation often felt like a luxury that existed somewhere else. For other families.

We know those drives. We know the waiting rooms in cities hours away. We know what it feels like to find a program that could help your child and then have to figure out the time, travel, cost, childcare, and logistics required just to access it. And we know how overwhelming it can be to navigate services, schools, insurance, benefits, therapies, and resources while simply trying to be a parent.

That realization changed everything. Because this was never just about our child. It was about every child in this community who deserves access to support, opportunity, recreation, education, and a place where they are known and celebrated — without having to leave their community to find it.

And along the way, we realized something else: you cannot truly support a child with a disability without supporting the family around them.

That means creating a place where parents can find answers and trusted Family Navigation instead of trying to piece everything together alone. Where caregivers can find respite, connection, and support for their own well-being. Where siblings are included. Where families can access inclusive childcare and educational opportunities, therapeutic and adaptive programs, sensory and decompression spaces, recreation, play, and meaningful community experiences.

Our vision has grown into something larger than a collection of services. We are working toward a permanent, year-round Special Needs Family Resource Center built around the realities of everyday family life — a place where children of all abilities can learn, play, grow, and belong, and where their families can find support under one roof.

Over time, that vision may include inclusive indoor and outdoor play, a children’s museum and learning experiences, adaptive recreation, water play, equine and therapeutic opportunities, family programs, classes, community gatherings, respite, caregiver support, and spaces designed specifically for children who need somewhere quieter to regulate and decompress.

Not every family will need every part of Angels Among Us. That is exactly the point. Families are different, needs change, and support should meet people where they are.

We are building Angels Among Us so families in Short Creek have more choices, more support, and fewer reasons to hear, “You’ll have to go somewhere else for that.”

Because every child deserves a place to belong — and every family deserves a community that helps them get there.

Our Foundation

Rooted in community. Built for generations.

Angels Among Us is a 501(c)(3) public charity, established in 2023 and rooted in the Short Creek Area. We are not a distant organization sending resources from afar — we are neighbors, parents, and community members working to build something lasting right here.

Every dollar donated, every hour volunteered, and every partnership formed helps move us toward a permanent, year-round Special Needs Family Resource Center — a place where children of all abilities can access support, recreation, learning, and opportunity, and where families can find Family Navigation, caregiver and sibling support, respite, connection, and community closer to home.

We are not finished. Short Creek is growing, and the needs of its families are growing with it. But our foundation does not shift: every child belongs, every family matters, and stronger families build stronger communities — right here, one connection at a time.

The Hidden Weight Caregivers Carry

Raising a child with significant support needs can be deeply meaningful — and deeply demanding. For many caregivers, the role extends far beyond parenting. It can mean constantly coordinating appointments, therapies, school meetings, specialists, disability services, insurance, waitlists, and systems that are often difficult to understand and even harder to access.

In rural communities, that weight can grow even heavier. Families may travel long distances for care, spend hours navigating services in other cities, and carry the pressure of knowing that the right support is not always close to home.

Over time, parents and caregivers often become advocates, coordinators, researchers, schedulers, and steady sources of strength for their families. The responsibility can be unrelenting — especially when a child has communication, behavioral, medical, sensory, or safety needs that require ongoing attention, patience, and care.

The emotional and practical demands of caregiving can affect the entire family. Parents may struggle to find time for their own health and well-being. Siblings may need support too. Families may experience stress, exhaustion, financial strain, and isolation while trying to hold everything together.

At Angels Among Us, we believe caregiver support is not separate from supporting the child — it is part of it. When caregivers have access to resources, connection, respite, and room to breathe, the whole family is stronger.
